Who
Can Join the PTA?
PTA is an inclusive
organization that is open to all adults who care about children and
schools.
We have learned that
the main thing parents want from schools is to help their child succeed
academically, emotionally, and personally. PTA bridges the connection
between homes and schools. By getting involved with PTA, the child who
benefits most is one’s own.
We reach out to diverse
communities to allow parents to more fully integrate their children into
the life of a school. We actively invite all parents to be involved in
their children’s education through participation in PTA. We work hard to
bring mothers, fathers, teachers, school administrators, grandparents,
mentors, foster parents, other caregivers, and community leaders into the
association.

Why
can't we hold more fundraisers?
"Fundraising is not a primary function
of the PTA."
PTA Money Matters Quick-Reference
Guide, Page 42, © 2007 www.PTA.org
Excerpt from Fundraising page on
California State PTA website.
Fundraising is
the method of raising money to finance PTA programs and projects . The
fundraising project must support the goals of PTA and be related to the
educational, charitable, and philanthropic purposes as a taxexempt
organization. When planning the years activities, PTAs should use the
3-to-1 rule. for every one fundraising activity, there should be at
least three nonfundraising programs aimed at helping parents or children
or advocating for school improvements.
It should
involve as many members as possible and be fun. It should not be a
burden to the school staff or parent volunteers, compete with or detract
from school lunch and nutrition programs, or conflict with other PTA,
school, or community events. Children should never be used to sell
door-to-door or exploited to raise funds. It cannot involve commercial
or advertising obligations. See National PTA Annual Resources for PTAs,
Money Matters which prescribes the ethics of fundraising.
The fundraising
project must have the approval of the membership in advance of the event
and the vote must be recorded in the minutes. Projects must have a
specific purpose. The project, if it is an on going activity or program
, must be approved each year by the association membership.
